Penelope…pt. 1

It has been a whirlwind of a week. I am sorry that I have not updated before now but DAMN! So let’s back up to last Monday.

Monday

I was scheduled for a 4pm c-section. I got bumped due to an emergency and didn’t get taken into surgery until after 5pm. This makes you grouchy and it makes your ass hurt from sitting on the crappy bed. I go back and they give me my spinal and things get started. Things are moving along just fine. The Dr. pulls Penelope out at 6pm on the dot. They weigh her (6lbs) and start cleaning her off and I hear the neonatologist talking about “transitioning her” but I don’t know what that means so I don’t think much about it at first. Then he brings the baby over to me and says he is taking her to the NICU because she isn’t breathing well (and she is blue). Steve had stepped back so that I could see her and he didn’t quite hear what the doc said. So he suddenly said “What? What is going on?” Teh doc said that they were going to the NICU because the baby wasn’t breathing well…did he want to go? So Steve went up to the NICU with Penelope and I had my tubes tied. I was freaking out and completely helpless. after about 5 minutes I started asking them to call the NICU (from the OR) to check on Penelope. They finally obliged me after about 15 minutes but had nothing good to report. Penelope was getting some oxygen and was going to be there for a bit. She could potentially stay up there for 4 hours without officially being “admitted” to the NICU. They finished sewing me up and I went ot recovery. After being in recovery for a little while I had them call the NICU again. Penelope was doing better and they were planning to move her to the well-baby nursery. I finally got to a room around 8pm or so. We were told that Penelope was in the process of being transferred to the nursery. I got settled in the room and Steph and Sarah hung out for a while with Steve, Mom and me. Because people want to make me crazy… it was 11p, before they brought Penelope. Steve had to be an ass to get her there that soon..but damn. So she was finally settled in my arms about 11:15p.

Happy Birthday Penelope!

Today is the day!

Cruel and Unusual

I think there is something evil about telling a pregnant woman she can’t eat for EIGHT hours before she has a baby. Don’t they know how hungry I am!?!? And it isn’t like it the 8 hours I will be asleep…oh no that would be easy. I have to get my ratty pregnant ass up and eat something before 8 am and then I have to be hungry until who knows when. I have to be at the hospital at 2pm for a 4pm c-section but by the time I have the baby, get my tubes tied (yea!), go to recovery and then get to the room…it will be a billion hours since I last ate. Even then I won’t be able to eat until the anesthesia wears off. This is important to remember because last time I rushed it and ended up puking on myself and nearly puking on Scout.

So those of you that are allowed to eat today…eat something good for me and then post about it in the comments to that I can eat vicariously!

On the list…

I am going to have a friend (Sarah - I am looking at you) send an email or some such notification once Miss P graces us with her presence on Monday. I will be forcing the email on some family and friends but if anyone here wants to make sure they are included…drop me a comment!

2 meltdowns - 1 morning

Posted on April 8th, 2008 in Scout by Aardvark

Sooooo Scout started preschool today. She is going to go two days a week. We have visited the school twice and both times she wanted to stay when it was time to go. So with great optimism I sent her with Steve this morning for her first day. She, of course, had a meltdown when Steve got her there and got ready to leave. Steve called me after he left to tell me that she was NOT happy to be there. This, in turn, made me feel horrible and I had a meltdown. So I waited a little bit and called to check on her. She was fine and having a morning snack with her friend Sydney. (For those of you who don’t know…My dear friend Nina is the Director in Training at the preschool and her daughter Sydney is the same age as Scout…so they are in the same class.)
I will probably call and check on her again later just to make sure she is ok. I wish we had started her a couple of weeks ago so that she would be more comfortable with the routine of going before Miss P arrives….but oh well. I really think once she gets in the swing of things…she will love it. She loves to be around other children and LOVES to socialize. (or maybe I am justifying it so that the guilt doesn’t kill me)
Anyway…keep your fingers crossed that the rest of the day goes well for her.

Dr. Hicks, I presume

I didn’t sleep well…I woke up several times last night with Braxton Hicks, I think I have been having them for several days. I never had any contractions at all with Scout so I didn’t even realize that I was having them this time…I just thought Miss P was trying to fight her way out. Then Steve said “Are you sure you aren’t having contractions?” I guess anything is possible. So I looked around on the web to see how people describe BH and low and behold I guess that is what is going on. It isn’t painful as much as really uncomfortable and kind of takes my breath away. But it will wake me form a dead sleep on occasion!

jinx?

I am almost afraid to write this post. I am afraid I will jinx my good fortune. OH WHAT THE HELL!

Scout is not an easy child. She was a pretty good baby but since she discovered free will she has embraced it and all the naughty that come with it. Earlier this week I posted about my frustration with getting her to stay in her bed at nap/bed time. Since then we have experienced a miraculous thing.
Scout is not only staying in her bed….SHE IS SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!!! She has always been a pretty good sleeper but she hasn’t slept through the night consistently since we moved in November. At first I think it was the move but then it became a habit. Most nights she would just wake up once and go right back to sleep…but I was never getting to sleep through the night. (At this point I don’t sleep through the night anyway…I get up to pee all night or i have to readjust my ginormous belly)

Now I am not by any means getting my hopes up…because who knows what is going to happen when Miss P shows up and starts wreaking havoc ;)
I have no idea how Scout is going to adjust or rebel to a whole new person living in her house FOREVER. But I will take what I can get for now and if she sleeps through the night for the next week…I will consider that a victory and I will consider myself Mother of the Year!

a great night and today’s TMI

Last night The Coven et al had a dinner outing to celebrate Miss Penelope’s impending arrival. Since she is my second baby and so close to the last one…I was very insistent that it just wasn’t proper to have a shower this time. Jamie pointed out that Penelope deserved a celebration and who I am to turn down dinner out with my favorite girls! I asked for no gifts but the ladies came bearing their favorite children’s books for Penelope’s library. Jamie even managed to find this fabulous book!!! (I have discovered that there are several of them in the series….we will be acquiring them)
Dinner was fabulous and so was the company. I really needed to be surrounded by a group of strong amazing women last night and that is just what I got. We laughed A LOT (Shooters). We shocked our waiter (eating babies). Caroline even did impressions! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

Now for today’s TMI - My breasts are leaking.

Who knew…
