Bonaire – Day the 1st and Day the 2nd

    By Aardvark | November 8, 2009

Saturday November 7, 2009 3:30 am. And so begins the trip. We had to be at the airport by 5am. We made it! Security at the HSV airport was crazy. I have never seen that many people in that airport at one time. We made our flight for final boarding and then ended up sitting in line for take off for about 30 mins. We made it to ATL just in time to book it to our connecting flight. Since we were a group of 30 coming from HSV…they were waiting. The flight was about 3.5 hours and not bad at all.

We got into Bonaire and got settled with our luggage, rental truck and resort. We unpacked and went to the dive briefing. We didn’t dive last night for a couple of reasons. We had not eaten and wanted to eat …and then we had a couple of drinks. Drinking and diving is not a good idea ;) Plus I have new gear and we wanted to try it out on an easy dive the first time. So since we weren’t going to do the night dive…we decided to have a few more drinks ;)
The bartender is great. I am a big believer in befriending the bartender and making sure he knows you are a good tipper!

This morning we grabbed a late breakfast (10am here) and then hit the water. We had some technical issues when we first got in put we got it all worked out and did our dive. I have to adjust to the new gear but it was still awesome! We saw some huge Tarpin and of course all the typical “finding Nemo” kind of fish. No sharks or turtles or eel…YET! Now we are hanging out in the room for our surface interval for a bit. Steve is working on his camera settings and then we are going to go out and take some pictures.

There are iguanas EVERYWHERE. They walk right up to your table while you are eating and come right up to the door of your bungalow. We have also seen a bunch of hermit crabs just wandering around all over the place. I saw one last night that was the size of a softball.

We are going to make another dive this afternoon and then again after dinner. I am happy as a clam with doing 3 dives a day… I think Steve is going to try and catch up with some of the other divers here so that he can log a few more than that everyday. I will try and get some pictures up soon!

Oh- sounds like so much fun. At some point I will resign myself to learning to dive. My hubs would be ecstatic. . .He’s been doing it for ages and has quit, since I don’t. He’s been pressuring me for a few years to learn.
Maybe the fun you have on this trip will convince me. SHARE!!
