    like sands through the hourglass…

    By Aardvark | September 26, 2008

It has been a week. Where do I start? How about last Friday… We went camping at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. Scout had a blast. It was nice but logistically..camping with a 5 month old is difficult. Next time I think Miss P and I may stay home. Miss P threw up all over both of us just in time to miss the hay ride. I didn’t think much of it since she is the reflux Queen. Saturday we were lazy and recovering from the camp out. Saturday night both girls were puny. I just chalked it up to being overly tired. Sunday started out ok…and then the vomit came! Penelope starting vomiting after every feeding. Not a little vomit…she would empty the entire contents of her stomach all over everything within a four foot area! It didn’t get better. Scout went to Sweetie’s house to spend the night and Steve and I took turns cleaning up P and her various targets. Monday morning I called the pediatrician (after over 12 hours of continuous vomiting). They made an appointment for P at 1:30 with one of the doctors (our primary doc was out sick). Mom brought Scout home but then I had to turn around and take her to Grandmother’s so I could take Penelope to the doctor.
We got to the doctor’s office and they took us right back (we seldom wait longer than 10 mins or so). The doc assessed Miss P and was very concerned. He said she was dehydrated (not hard to do when you weigh < 12lbs) and he was worried that she wasn't peeing or pooping. He wanted to run tests and get her fluids. So he decided the best course of action was to admit her to the hospital. By 2pm we were on our way to Hsv Hospital. They admitted Miss P to a room and got her ready for a Barium Swallow. After waiting forever...we finally headed to Radiology for the swallow. It showed that not only does Miss P have reflux...she has a pretty serious case of it. Luckily there was nothing else wrong with her GI track. After that misery we went back upstairs so that they could start an IV for fluids. Now is it apparently hard to start an IV on an infant and even harder if they are dehydrated...so that was fun. They finally got her all hooked up and said I could nurse her. And of course the vomiting was not far behind. So they gave her some iv Zofran (along with the zantac and fluids) to help her keep down the milk. Let me just say that Zofran is a magical drug! She was able to eat (even if she didn't have much of an appetite) and keep it down! The next morning the our doctor came by to check on her but wasn't quite ready to let her go home. Miss P and I hung out all day. In the meantime Steve was home with a sick Scout. Finally about 6ish the nurse said that the doctor was going to come and probably discharge Penelope. I guess she got overly excited because she started vomiting again. Back on the Zofran and another night in the hospital. Finally Thursday morning our pediatrician came in and said that she was good and hydrated and she could go home...BUT with a Rx for Zofran. Scout was better so Steve and I arranged for her to go to school (even though it wasn't her regular day). So after two nights in the hospital...we headed home. We had a little trouble finding the Zofran at a pharmacy but we chased it down. By the time we got home we were both exhausted and after eating we both crashed for about 3 or 4 hours.
So fast forward to today and Miss P is feeling better. She is not 100% and her appetite isn't back to normal but she is doing better. As long as she is getting the Zofran every 8 hours...she is keeping food down. The doctor said we will just have ot let the virus run its course and until it does...take the Zofran.

Now for some things that are slightly irrelevant...

    - The breast pump at the hospital was AMAZING!!! Since P isn't eating like normal .... I have been pumping to relieve the pressure. I was able to pump 7 ounces in less than 10 mins using the pump at the hospital! At home it take me twice as long! The hospital pump was a Medela Symphony. I want to make out with it. It costs about $1500 so I won't be making out with it anytime soon.... but if I had to pump all the time I would totally rent one!

    - Tiny little hospital gowns are waaay cuter than grown up ones.

    - The pull out couch bed at the hospital sucks.

    - Everyone who came into the room was charmed by Miss P and really how could they not be.... look at that face!
