Nursing round two (AKA: one more post Scout will hate me for when she is 12…)
By Aardvark | May 14, 2008
I nursed Scout until she was 13 months old. The first 3 months of it were complete HELL! But we made it through and I planned on nursing Penelope. Nursing Penelope has been completely and totally easy. She latched on perfectly from day one and we have had NO issues. No sore nipples, no clogged ducts, nothing. Hallelujah! I was nervous about the nursing because of the rocky start I had the first time but it couldn’t be better. The other thing that crossed my mind on a regular basis was what Scout would think about me nursing Penelope. I had read that sometimes older siblings will be jealous or will want to nurse too. I wasn’t “worried” about it but I did give it some thought. The first few days we were home Scout was interested in me nursing Penelope and eventually she did ask to nurse. I told her that she drinks her milk from a cup now and she seems fine with that. She hasn’t asked again. A couple of days ago I was nursing Penelope and Scout came over and climbed up in the chair with us. She then proceeded to pull up her shirt and tell me “I feed the baby.” (Is it wrong that I thought this was the freaking cutest thing??) So I explained to her that Mommies are the ones that feed babies like that and that she couldn’t feed Penelope. She hasn’t mentioned feeding Penelope again…however, she has started pretending to nurse her “babies.” It cracks me up. I am sure some people would be freaked out but I am guessing it is perfectly natural for her to mimic me nursing AND I think it is cute.

A) I’m thrilled it’s been such a good experience this time around. Hooray for easy!!
B) I think it’s hysterical that Scout wants to nurse. She knows a good mommy when she sees one.

Too cute that Scout wants to nurse.
I am terrified of trying to breastfeed – too many horror stories about it being awful. I hope to make it through.

I’m so glad Penelope is a nursing champ!
I’ve read it is perfectly normal for older siblings to want to nurse. It is so cute that she is trying to nurse her babies!

I have heard that girls will try to nurse their “babies” I have always wondered how I would feel about that, sounds weird, so I am glad to hear you think it is cute. I guess I will be finding out soon enough!

I’m pretty sure I did the same thing with my dolls after seeing my mom nurse my kid sister. I guess it is natural…but it’s funny at the same time!

That is so cute! What a good Mommy to her dollys.
I am very glad to hear that the 2nd go-round has been easier on you. Im 7.5 months in on my first and it was very hard.

It’s normal for older siblings to “nurse” their babies. My friend’s son tried to “nurse” one of his bears after being around nursing mothers. That cracked me up!

That’s not weird – that’s sweet! She’s just sees you being a good Mommy and she wants to emulate – how anyone could think that was strange is beyond me, but I know there are trolls just about everywhere these days.
It’s good to see you back! Happy late Mother’s Day! To be honest, I would be tempted to trade my DSW gift card for the chance to sleep as late as I wanted…. that is PRICELESS!! Hope you’re getting some sleep these days!

That is funny – Bella would “nurse” her babies (aka stuffed animals) when Brooklyn was a baby and was nursing. I only nursed Bella until about 8 months due to suppy issues which come to find out was because I was pregnant with Brooklyn. Now Brooklyn I nursed until almost 16 months (alas, at which time I was pregnant again). I’m interested to see how Brooklyn reacts to me nursing when the new baby arrives in December….
Cute Story and glad it is going so well!!
