heart’s desire
Yesterday I decided we just had to get out of the house. We headed to Chick-Fil-A for lunch. It was overcast and finally not in the triple digits so we hit the outside play area with our lunch. The girls sat at the table and gobbled down their lunch so that they could get up and play (who am I kidding…P gobbles her food anyway). There were several other children playing but since school is back in session…it was all preschoolers and toddlers. Scout found a friend and got busy playing. Penelope was happy (or so it seemed) just to wander around and climb up and down the baby slide. Eventually Miss P and this one little boy started sort of taking turns following each other around. He was DARLING. Big blue eyes and hair so blond it was white. He even had a tan. (He was probably 2.) They were precious following each other around. I get up and walk over to check on Scout and when I turn around I see that Penelope has cornered the little boy and is kissing him over and over on his face! The little boy was just standing there looking sheepish and grinning. Of course all of the moms on the playground were cracking up. I finally had to go over and rescue him from Miss. P and her affections!
(For the record… Daddy did not find any humor in this story
)
Today was Scout’s first day of official Preschool! I took her this morning and she was SUPER excited. She hugged me and kissed me and then told me she would see me later. She ran off happy as a clam. (What the hell do clams have to be so happy about anyway?) This afternoon when I picked her up she was full of exciting details to tell me. She filled me in on things she colored (a picture of a tree), the things they talked about during circle time (Today is Monday), what they read during story time… this is where the story picked up a bit. Scout was very excited about the book they read. She was telling me about it but she couldn’t remember the title. Her description went something like this “it was the book and everyone was tired and sleeping and they were all together and sleeping and they were on top of each other and they all sleep together and they took a nap and sleep with everyone.” Now some mothers may have been wondering why the class was reading Hugh Hefner’s biography during story time (because really Larry Flynt would be a much more interesting read) but I immediately started going through the vast catalog of Children’s Literature in my brain.

click…… OH!
The Napping House by Audrey Wood
So I ask Scout “Was it The Napping House?” and she gets even more excited and starts telling me about it again and saying “Yes. The Napping House!” Then she stops suddenly and looks at me and says (with suspicion dripping from her words)… “How you know that?”
So I guess it is just as well they weren’t reading Larry Flynt.
This week Scout took her first dance class. It was a 4 day “camp” of sorts called Tutus and Tiaras. The class was 2.5 hours a day. The would start with some dance fundamentals and movement then they would do a craft. Then story time, a little pre ballet and the last thing they would do was sit and watch one of the company dancers do a short performance. Scout has loved it! Now gross motor skills have never been her strength. She had mastered the pincher grasp at 6 months but didn’t walk until about 13 month. She can color in the lines but she hasn’t quite figured out skipping. So hopefully this kind of class will help her become a little more familiar with how her body works and moves.
This is one of my favorite moves from her performance today
As part of her Baby of the Month prize package, Penelope won a photo session with Heather Bookout Photography. I was super excited about the photo session because I had seen Heather’s work displayed in various locations around town and of course online. Her style of photography and editing is so beautiful and unique AND very different than any pictures the girls have ever had made. Let me just say that I had HIGH expectations….and HOLY MOLY were they ever exceeded. The whole experience was perfect. I use the word experience because that is exactly what it was… From the very first phone call to the studio to set up the appointment to this very blog post….everything was perfect. Heather is not only an amazing photographer but she has surrounded herself with an amazing staff. In fact, Heather was walking in as I was unloading Miss P and she even helped me carry the clothes in! We were so well taken care of the entire session. They had blocked out plenty of time to work with Miss P and Heather had very real expectations of what a 15 month old could/would do and/or tolerate. (I will now take a minute to brag on my child. Penelope was wonderful! I couldn’t have asked for her to be more cooperative and pleasant. She was totally embracing her Baby of the Month status and using it for good!) The studio is gorgeous and open and inviting. It was completely functional and gorgeous but it was also CHILD FRIENDLY! P was walking around and I wasn’t worried about her tripping over cords or running into lights or generally risking life and limb.
Heather came in and talked to me about Miss P’s wardrobe choices and our personal style and decor preferences. You can tell that for her the photography is her art and she wants it to fit into your home and life that way. She is completely passionate about what she does…and it makes all the difference!
I know it seems like I am just going on and on and by now you are probably thinking “I thought she was speechless!”…but I really cannot say enough about our experience.
**Did I mention that she had a C-section FOUR weeks ago!**
Now for the speechless part…
Heather sent me 5 sneak peek preview shots this afternoon. I have no words to describe them but they brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you so much Heather!
Dear Ronda—
Congratulations on Penelope having been chosen as the baby of the month for June. She is just the cutest thing! You can claim her prizes at 1000 Monte Sano Blvd, m-f 8-5. (We will be closed tomorrow for the 4th.)
All the info will be in the packet to help you set up your photo session at Bookout. We will use the photos that they take for Baby of the Year voting. In addition to your session, you will have a $50 gift certificate to use there.
I am very impressed by the way that you “campaigned” for Penelope, using your blog and twitter. We’ve seen a lot of attempts at work arounds to the voting system and other nuisance behaviors….it is delightful to see someone do it honestly with the help of new and social media tools.
And you do have a very nice blog!!!!

I am in love with this picture. I am no photographer and I am sure the color and the composition lack existence…but I can’t look at this image without smiling. I love my sweet Scout.
Here is Scout singing her own unique version of the classic song from Sleeping Beauty!
